THE RAILWAY CHILDREN ( NOVEL FOR 2012)

The Novel for Form 3 - PMR 2012 is called "The Railway Children" written by Edith Nesbit. It was made into a movie in the year 1970.You can watch this movie on youtube.Below is the plot summary.

The story concerns a family who move to a house near the railway after the father is falsely accused of selling state secrets to the Russians and imprisoned for five years. The three children, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis, find amusement in watching the trains on the nearby railway line and waving to the passengers.

They become friendly with Perks, the station porter, and with The Old Gentleman who regularly takes the 9.45 down train. He is eventually able to help prove their father's innocence, and the family is reunited.

The theme of an innocent man being falsely imprisoned for espionage and finally vindicated might have been influenced by the Dreyfus Affair, which was a prominent world-wide news item a few years before the book was written.

  11. Hello Fara, I trully wish I could accommodate all the students in Malaysia but unfortunately my hands are tied with other responsibilities. Therefore, my answer is 'No', I would not be able to give notes for the novel 'Around The World In 80 Days'.

I am teaching ESL English course at a private English Language Center. So, you see, I am rather busy with preparing notes for my students at the center.

    character you admire:
In the story,The Railway Children the character i admire most is peter who was the second in the family and had ambitions of becoming an engineer. He was resourceful and helped himself to the coal at railway station. It was wrong of him to consider it mining rather than stealing,It showed initiative on his part.
As the only boy in the family,he was protective of his sisters.when he caught stealing the coal he insisted his sisters were not involved.like boys of his age,he was mischievous and played pranks and teased his sisters. But he was generous with them as show by the fact he was willing to part with half of his engine as a birthday gift to Roberta.
When landslide resulted in the railway tracks being covered by earth Peter realised they had to stop the train in order to prevent a disastrous accident. With clarity of mind he knew they needed to warm the coming train. He took carge of the whole operation of waving flags made from the girls' red petticoats.Peter ordered Roberta not to stand on the lines as it was too dangerous.
For a boy of his age,Peter showed maturity and strength of character.
